Personality MCP: how ChatGPT and Claude learn who you are
With a personality MCP, your AI assistant uses your personality profile as input. Learn what MCP is, what the connection does and how to set it up.
ChatGPT and Claude know an awful lot, but they don't know who you are. Ask which car suits you and you get a tidy list for the average person. Ask how to handle a difficult conversation and you get advice that is roughly right for everyone. That isn't the model's fault. It simply doesn't know whether you prefer to plan or improvise, whether people or quiet give you energy, and whether you communicate directly or more carefully.
A personality MCP fixes that. You connect your personality profile to your AI assistant once. From then on, it uses that profile as input for every piece of advice you ask for. The page about the Personal User Guide AI connection shows how it works. In this article you'll learn what MCP is, what the connection does exactly and how to set it up.
What is MCP?
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It's an open standard that lets AI assistants use data from other apps securely. You may know it from connections to your calendar, your email or Google Drive. The AI assistant only requests that data when your question needs it.
A personality MCP does the same, but with who you are. Instead of your calendar, your AI assistant reads your personality profile. At Personal User Guide, that profile comes from the personality test, which is based on the Big Five, the personality model most widely used in psychology.
What does your AI assistant read?
The connection gives your AI assistant access to five things:
- Your personality profile. Your preferences on five dimensions, including what gives you energy, how you make decisions and how you like to work and communicate. The profile is written in the first person, just like your own user guide.
- How you want it to talk. One line per preference on the tone and format of answers: short or detailed, conclusion first or ideas first, direct or careful.
- Collaboration advice. Describe a colleague or partner, and your AI assistant estimates their preferences and gives advice for your combination.
- Our knowledge base. Articles on personality, feedback, difficult conversations and team dynamics.
- The link to the test. If you don't have a profile yet, you get that link.
Important: the connection only shares your own profile. The profiles of your connections and team members stay on Personal User Guide. And the connection is read-only. Your AI assistant can't change or send anything.
What do you notice in a conversation?
You don't have to do anything differently. Just ask your question. If you ask "Plan a week-long holiday that suits me", your AI assistant first fetches your profile. If you're curious and dominant, you get a different week than if you're conventional and quiet. A good AI assistant also tells you which preferences shaped the advice, so you can judge for yourself whether it fits.
You notice it even when you don't ask about yourself. Your AI assistant adapts the tone and format of its answers to your personality. If you're focused, it starts with the conclusion and ends with concrete next steps. If you're quiet, it keeps things short. If you're competitive, it gets straight to the point.
That works for almost anything where advice gets better when someone knows you. From a new car or clothes to a job application, a gift or a tough conversation. The article on AI advice that suits you walks through six worked examples.
How to set up the connection
You need a Personal User Guide account with a completed test. After that, it takes three steps:
- Copy the server URL from the AI connection page.
- In Claude, ChatGPT or another AI assistant, open the settings for connectors or apps and add a custom connector with that URL.
- Log in with your Personal User Guide account, using the code you receive by email, and grant permission.
It works straight away. In Microsoft Copilot, MCP servers are usually added by your organization's IT administrator.
Want your AI assistant to take your style into account in every conversation, even when it doesn't call the connection? Then ask it for instructions for your AI assistant. You get a short text that you paste once into ChatGPT's or Claude's own instructions.
What about privacy?
When your AI assistant fetches your profile, the profile texts go to the AI provider you connect, such as OpenAI or Anthropic. Their privacy policy applies, just as it does to anything you type into a chat yourself. With personal accounts, conversations may be used to improve models by default, unless you turn that off. With business accounts, that's usually not the case. So it's worth checking your settings.
You can disconnect whenever you like in your AI assistant's settings. Personal User Guide only stores which feature was used, not what you asked.
Frequently asked questions
What is a personality MCP?
A personality MCP is a connection via the Model Context Protocol that lets an AI assistant read your personality profile. ChatGPT, Claude or another assistant then uses that profile as input, so advice and answers fit better with how you work, decide and communicate.
Does the connection cost anything?
No. The connection is free for everyone with a Personal User Guide account. You do need a completed personality test, because that's where the profile your AI assistant reads comes from.
Will I notice it even if I don't ask about myself?
Yes. Your AI assistant adapts the tone and format of its answers to your personality, for example short or detailed, and direct or careful. If you want that in every conversation, ask for instructions for your AI assistant and paste them into your settings.
Can my AI assistant see my colleagues' profiles?
No. The connection only shares your own profile. If you want advice on working with someone, you describe that person yourself. Your AI assistant estimates their preferences and gives advice for your combination.
