Solving problems with a curious person: explore broadly, choose clearly
A curious person connects new ideas to what works. Explore several explanations and still make an actionable choice on time.
Customer service wait times have been rising for three weeks. Two solutions are on the table: more team training or a new ticketing system. Your curious colleague looks at the numbers and asks, “Do we actually know whether the problem starts with knowledge, allocation, or the intake itself?”
Half an hour later, the board is full. You could listen back to calls, shadow two employees, compare the intake fields, and test a different routing method. Every route could teach you something. The only thing nobody knows is what will happen on Monday.
That is the strength and the risk of curiosity in a single meeting. A curious person does not automatically accept the first explanation, connects ideas that were previously separate, and looks for innovation when the work calls for it. Without a boundary, careful exploration can turn into adding one more possibility every time.
A good problem-solving process does not ask this colleague to stop asking questions. It makes clear which question matters, how many options you will investigate, and when new information must lead to a choice.
Curious does not mean everything must remain interesting
In a personal user guide, a curious person sits between conservative and progressive. This colleague values new situations and ideas, but usually explores them for a reason. They can take an existing method seriously while investigating whether another route would work better.
That can add a great deal to problem solving. A curious person challenges the diagnosis, brings in information from another angle, and often sees a practical combination of old and new. They do not have to reject what is familiar to support an experiment.
The downside comes from the same preference. Because several perspectives can sound reasonable, an option easily remains open a little longer. One research question leads to a second, and one trial gains an extra variation. Or the colleague chooses the most applicable route too quickly and misses an idea that lies further beyond what is familiar.
That is why “we need to stop thinking now” is not a useful boundary. It makes curiosity the problem and says nothing about when you have learned enough. A better question is: which uncertainty must we resolve in order to decide?
Give exploration a clear finish line
A curious person usually does not need a ban on new ideas. They need an investigation in which questions have a function.
Start with one observable problem. “Customer service is not running smoothly” is too broad. “Average wait time has risen from four to seven minutes in three weeks” shows what you are trying to change. Also agree on what falls outside this round, so every interesting signal does not enter the same investigation.
Next, formulate no more than three explanations that would genuinely lead to different actions. Perhaps intake takes longer, work reaches the wrong employee, or knowledge is missing for one type of question. For each explanation, note what small piece of evidence would make it more or less likely. Treat the current method as option zero, not as an invisible default.
Finally, choose the decision time and criteria in advance. You do not need complete certainty. You need to know enough to choose the best next step, including who will carry it out and when you will check the effect.

Translate the same idea into a first actionable step
An idea can be sound and still remain an invitation to keep thinking. Phrases such as “we could look into” or “it might be interesting to” open a conversation, but they do not show who will try what or when there will be something to evaluate.
The content does not need to become narrower. Turn the same idea into a short sequence of actions. Name the aim, first trial, owner, and decision time. That preserves room to learn without letting the idea remain only a subject for the next meeting.

Three perspectives on the same problem
What you need to watch when working with a curious colleague also depends on your own preference. Two curious people can investigate thoughtfully together and keep moving the decision. A conservative person can make the current practice testable but close a new path too early. A progressive person can open unexpected possibilities and let the number of options grow too quickly.
Agree in advance which information is enough, so shared nuance does not become delay without an owner.
Bring evidence from current practice and let at least one genuinely different explanation compete fairly.
Choose the innovative route that tests the assumption most sharply and park ideas that would teach the same thing.
If you are curious too
Two curious people can take a problem apart carefully. You do not automatically accept the first explanation, can connect practice and theory, and are open to a trial without immediately discarding what exists. This often produces solutions that are both new and workable.
The blind spot is that you both find each additional question reasonable. Nobody has to prolong the conversation deliberately. There is simply always one more relevant nuance. The team can learn a lot and still end without an owner, deadline, or next action.
Make the decision time part of the research design. Before collecting anything, write: “If we see A, we try route one. If we see B, we try route two.” New information may change the criteria, but only when you make that decision explicitly.
Also ask one colleague who was not part of the analysis to summarize what happens next. If that cannot be done in two sentences, the investigation has not yet become a working agreement.
If you are conservative
As a conservative colleague, you probably know the current method, its exceptions, and why certain steps exist. You can prevent an interesting idea from solving a problem that exists only in the meeting room.
Tension arises when your evidence is used only to reject new explanations. “We tried that before” may contain valuable experience, but it does not yet explain what was different then, what the outcome was, or whether the same conditions still apply. To a curious person, the conversation then feels closed before the comparison is fair.
Make your knowledge testable. Describe which current step creates value, which earlier experiment failed, and why. Then ask the curious colleague to place one alternative next to option zero and use the same criteria for both.
You do not need to become enthusiastic about every possibility. You help the team by clarifying what evidence would give a new route a fair chance.
If you are progressive
As a progressive colleague, you often see another route before the team has fully described the problem. You can break an assumption that has become so familiar that nobody notices it. This gives a curious person material to look beyond the first two explanations.
The pitfall is turning every new insight into an additional direction. Five options may give you energy. For your curious colleague, they can become five serious routes that all deserve attention. The investigation then grows faster than the evidence.
Do not bring every idea. Bring the difference that is still missing. Ask, “Which assumption are we not testing yet?” Then choose the route that differs most and state which result would make it better than the current approach.
Accept the decision time as well. A parking lot for ideas is not a rejection of innovation. It protects the trial that is now sharp enough to teach you something genuinely new.
Five agreements you can copy directly
Solving problems with a curious person does not require special treatment. It requires reciprocal agreements that combine room for exploration with responsibility for a choice.
- We describe the visible problem first. We name what is changing, where it happens, and who experiences the effect before choosing an explanation or solution.
- The current method is option zero. We make its benefits and shortcomings as testable as every new proposal.
- We investigate no more than three distinct explanations. Each explanation gets one source of evidence and must lead to a different possible next step.
- We decide in advance when we know enough. Criteria and decision time are set before new information arrives. Some uncertainty may remain.
- Every decision ends with an owner and a check-in. Ideas we do not choose move visibly to a parking lot; they do not quietly compete with execution.
These agreements also help when nobody calls themselves curious. In our analysis of 2,705 personality profiles, 11% were conservative, 43% curious, and 46% progressive. A problem-solving process that only protects what is familiar or follows every new idea misses a large group that wants to connect innovation to usefulness.
What usually backfires
“Just think outside the box” is not a research question. It does not identify which boundary is restrictive, which problem remains because of it, or what a better idea must achieve.
Unlimited brainstorming does not automatically help either. A long list can make creativity visible, but without distinct hypotheses and criteria it is not yet a problem-solving process. Do not limit imagination. Limit the number of routes receiving evidence at the same time.
Do not ask for complete certainty. A curious person can always find another relevant question. Decide which uncertainty could genuinely reverse the decision and accept that the rest will be answered during execution.
And do not treat the parking lot as a second plan. Ideas without an owner, a time, or a trigger are notes. As soon as they demand attention in between, they compete with the chosen trial again.
The smallest useful start
You do not need an extensive research plan. Complete these four lines together before the next meeting:

This short block gives a curious person room to test an assumption, a conservative person a fair comparison with current practice, and a progressive person a place for a genuinely different route.
